Pennsylvania One Book, now in its second year continues to promote early literacy among preschoolers. Librarians and museum educators have designed programs and activities to help families enrich the reading experience.
A Splendid Friend, Indeed, by Suzanne Bloom, is this year’s One Book. It will be shared with preschoolers across the state at childcare centers, libraries, and museums. Many special events have been planned for children and their families throughout March and April.
Maine Discovery Museum, the largest New England children’s museum north of Boston, has announced the winner of the 2006 Time of Wonder Children’s Book Award, given to a book published for the first time by a US publisher in the previous year that “captures the sense of wonder and imagination of the most enduring children’s literature.”
The 2006 Time of Wonder Honor Book is A Splendid Friend, Indeed by Suzanne Bloom, published by Boyds Mills Press. Boldly colored, energetic, yet simple illustrations capture the exasperation of polar bear, whose reading, writing, and solitary pleasures are continually interrupted by an antic (sic) goose looking for someone to play with. In the end, even contemplative bear can’t resist taking a tea break with a new friend.
